10/15 Swedish Death Metal, Thirty Years Ago In 1995, thirty years ago, Swedish death metal had already moved beyond the HM-2 revolution, while self-sustaining underground communities had formed in the major cities, simultaneously redefining what could still be achieved within the genre. The second session of the Small Venue Record Club will focus on this transitional period. It was also a time when albums were released that remain essential to any discussion of extreme music. In fact, it’s still mind-blowing to think that only three days separated the release of Slaughter of the Soul and Storm of the Light’s Bane. Most of the evening, however, will be dedicated to exploring the era’s search for identity and the kinds of releases suited to a small-venue setting. We’ll talk about the early legacy of Therion, the first golden age of death and roll, and of course bands such as Edge of Sanity, Sacrilege, Desultory, Dismember, and Centinex. And, naturally, we’ll include anything you want to bring into the conversation. The Small Venue Record Club is similar to a book club, but instead of books and authors, we discuss albums and bands in an intimate, relaxed setting. The discussion will be led by Dávid Bali, author of the book and newsletter of the same name (https://kisterem.substack.com/). The event is free, and you’re encouraged to bring your opinions, questions, and comments—there’s nothing better than talking about music together. www.durerkert.com
