Laibach was formed in 1980 in Trbovlje, Slovenia, and from the very beginning operated more as an artistic collective than a conventional band. Their music brings together industrial sounds, monumental choral arrangements, martial rhythms and classical music, while their work repeatedly explores questions of power, propaganda, ideology and mass culture. During the Yugoslav era, their provocative aesthetic led to them being banned in Slovenia, while albums such as Nova Akropola, Opus Dei, their reinterpretation of the Beatles’ Let It Be, Kapital, NATO, WAT and Volk, their reimagining of national anthems, established their international reputation. Their work deliberately appropriates and reinterprets existing cultural, political and musical elements, and in 1983 they coined and defined the term “retro-avant-garde.”

On May 1 this year, Laibach released their latest album, MUSICK, which simultaneously celebrates and critiques a contemporary culture increasingly shaped by AI, where the boundaries between reality and imitation are becoming increasingly blurred. Musically, the album also draws on contemporary pop, K-pop and ’90s Eurodance.
